Médico inglés. Introdujo el termómetro clínico moderno (hasta entonces el termómetro había sido un instrumento de 30 cm de largo que tardaba 20 minutos en registrar la temperatura) y esbozó el uso del oftalmoscopio para inspeccionar el interior del ojo. Demostró el origen aórtico de la angina de pecho. Sus investigaciones mejoraron el tratamiento de las enfermedades arteriales y culminaron entre otros trabajos, en Diseases of the Arteries, Including Angina Pectoris [Enfermedades de las arterias, incluida la angina de pecho] (1915). Su publicación principal fue Systems of Medicine [Sistemas de la medicina] (8 vol., 1896–99).
